Off-leash beaches and parks
The Sunshine Coast also has several dog-friendly parks and beaches. Here are our top picks:
Coolum Beach - sections 67 to 72
With its surf, sand, and a creek perfect for paddling, Coolum Beach is a haven for salty sea dogs! This stretch of the beach is off-leash year-round, offering acres of golden sand to roam, stretching from north of Coolum Beach Caravan Park to around one kilometre past Stumers Creek. To access the off-leash area, drive through the beachfront reserve to the car park, where you'll find a playground and picnic tables. From there, it's just a short walk to the beach or creek, promising hours of fun for you and your furry friend!
Buddina Beach – sections 210 to 217
A beach that's off-leash at all times, at Buddina Beach you can take in the vibrant paragliders soaring above or relish the panoramic ocean views as you stroll along this peaceful, picturesque stretch of coastline.
Noosa Spit
The riverside along Claude Batten Drive on Noosa Spit is an off-leash-at-all-times dog beach, offering an excellent spot for pups to play. It's also a favourite local picnic area and an ideal place to watch watercraft on the Noosa River.
Currimundi Beach – sections 249 to 253
This fantastic surf beach is the top choice for dog-friendly beaches on the south Sunshine Coast. Off-leash play is allowed 24/7, giving your dog plenty of time to enjoy the one-kilometre stretch of sand, with lots of room to swim, frolic in the sand, and run freely!
North Shore Beach, Twin Waters
Off-leash at all times, this stretch of beach runs from the Maroochy River to 500 metres south of the safety-flagged bathing area at beach access 132. It offers a pristine wilderness setting with stunning coastal views, perfect for racing your dog along the shore. Explore the area around Pincushion Island, take a dip in the calm river waters, and let you pup get to know their four-legged companions!
Sunshine Beach
The off-leash area at Sunshine Beach extends from Entrance 27 to the National Park headland, offering a scenic stretch of surf beach. This protected area is bordered by upscale beachfront homes perched on the hill above, with the stunning backdrop of Noosa National Park.
Dog-friendly hikes and walks
While the Sunshine Coast may be most famous for its beaches, there are also some pawsome walks you can do with your furry mate by your side.
Mount Ninderry Trail
The Mount Ninderry Trail is a popular choice, but it's quite rocky and hilly, so we recommend hiking up Mount Ninderry instead. Situated in an environmental reserve near Yandina, you can begin the Mt Ninderry Walking Track from Eucalyptus Crescent in Ninderry. This 2.8km return trail leads you to the 304-metre summit, with a 130-metre climb along the way. At the top, you'll find two lookout options to enjoy the views from the plateau.
Maleny Trail
If you're looking for more dog-friendly bushwalks, head inland to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, where you'll find plenty of options. One of the most popular and easy dog-friendly walks is the Maleny Trail, located in the town of Maleny. It begins at the Maleny Showground and stretches 4.8km to Fairview, a heritage-listed house just outside town, mostly following the scenic Obi Obi Creek. The trail consists of paved paths and boardwalks, offering a smooth, mud-free walk. While dogs must be kept on a leash along the trail, they are allowed off-leash in parts of the showground.
Coolum Coastal Boardwalk
Although dogs aren't allowed on the hike up Mount Coolum, there's a beautiful dog-friendly walk at the other end of Coolum Beach—the Coolum Coastal Boardwalk. Starting at the southern end of Coolum Beach near the surf club, the boardwalk gently climbs to a whale-watching lookout at Wilkinson Park on the headland. The 800-metre boardwalk is an easy, pleasant walk, though dogs must be kept on a leash the entire way. At the lookout, you can spot whales during migration season. The boardwalk is part of a longer series of paths that follow the coastline of the Sunshine Coast, from Tewantin south to Bells Creek. It's possible to extend your walk in either direction.
