Hybrid Caravan FAQs
A hybrid caravan combines the best parts of a caravan and a camper trailer. For example, the towing ability and suspension of a camper trailer and a caravan's rigid, permanent walls. Camper trailers do have some advantages over hybrid caravans. For example, they are typically narrower than a caravan and lighter than other RVs, and their towing height is generally lower for easier rear-view visibility. However, you need to weigh this up with the upsides of hybrid caravans. Both can travel up dirt roads; however, camper trailers can be challenging to assemble once you get there. They also don’t have key amenities like air conditioning and running water, a fully functional kitchen, and an ensuite with a toilet and shower.
Quality hybrid caravans are generally associated with the ability to go entirely off-road—most caravans are too heavy and wide to be towed in certain environments. A well-designed and constructed hybrid will be robust and compact enough to go pretty much anywhere. They are self-sufficient, with power and water systems that allow them to travel independently, including to free camps, on beaches, on private properties, in national parks, and in the open areas of caravan parks.
Caravans have smaller internal kitchens, whereas hybrid caravans have external ‘slide out’ kitchens (and some even internal kitchen facilities). In terms of size, they are narrower than caravans, and therefore they more closely follow the track wheels of your tow vehicle. This can reduce drag, and the potential to get bogged, particularly in sand. Building techniques are typically different with good hybrids. A high-quality hybrid will be a lot more robust and designed for tougher terrain, enabling you to go further and have more options regarding where you travel. Caravans are generally designed to optimise space rather than weight, so they are lighter and less durable in the frame and chassis. Hybrid caravans are designed to withstand the rigours of rough movement when travelling on harsh terrain.
